Make your local store say no to plastic!
Did you know that the so called "green bags" we are being encouraged to use are made from plastic and will take up to 1000 years to degrade? Ok so we reuse them until they become tatty or we forget them, but how many old plastic bag do we save by using "Green bags" and are we putting the same amount of plastic into our landfills? The large supermarket stores have a Biodegradable alternative to the plastic bag, that is made from sustainable plant starch. These will become good quality compost within 45 days and actually improve the soil.
On the down side, my research has discovered that not all Biodegradable bags are as green as they claim. The best seem to be from naturegirl.com.au and becausewecare.com.au. The bags have been tested to the highest standards and more importantly are supported by Jon Dee from DoSomething and Planet Ark.
