Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are great energy savers, and last longer than regular bulbs. But please remember that they contain mercury and as such, should never be disposed off with regular trash. Mercury is highly toxic and you never know where the bulb may end up -- poisoning groundwater or waterways, or people and animals who live at or near disposal sites. CFLs should always be sent to a facility that can dispose of them in the right way. Many recycling centers offer this service.
